Gerhardt Dübner was a painter/ decorator who first worked in his father’s business in the small Thuringian village of Mechterstädt
until, around 1980, his father retired and he took over the family business.
He spent his whole working life decorating and renovating
other people’s homes and houses, but what he really was, is an enormously talented and accomplished artist who has left us hundreds
of superb water colors and quite a number of works in oil, gouache and other techniques.
The people in the area came to him to order paintings as gifts for family and friends or to have their old wardrobes, chests and other furniture decorated in the traditional style. He was also employed to create a couple of large-scale wall paintings in festival halls and the like.
Gerhardt Dübner died on 25 March 2003 at the age of 67 as a result of a heart failure produced by a life-long suffering from diabetes.
Apart from a handful of private exhibitions in places like the local doctor’s waiting room and surgery, his incredible talent has never really been recognized.
